This is a quick and easy system to get a work place in the shape that it needs to be in to maximize performance. The 5S are 5 Japanese words, and their 5 English counterparts, that describe the steps that should be taken to bring your inefficient work station to a lean mean producing machine.

Seiri (Sort) – Throwaway things that aren’t needed.

Seiton (Straighten) – Put things in a way so that they are easy to be found when needed.

Seiso (Shine) – Keep dirt and garbage out of the work area. Clean and Polished.

Seiketsu (Standardize) – Schedule regular cleaning and maintenance.

Shitsuke (Sustain) – Keep the standards that were set.
